Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Early Hyrule Surface Route

The Legend of Zelda · Game · Last updated Mar 5, 2026

Overview

This guide expands your post–Great Sky Island route in Tears of the Kingdom into a fuller early-game walkthrough.

Goals:

  • Unlock several key **Skyview Towers**
  • Grab strong early **armor and weapons**
  • Build a network of shrines and safe travel points
  • Discover a few useful **secrets** that many players miss

---

Phase 1 – Lookout Landing Deep Dive

1. After landing near Lookout Landing, talk to:

  • Purah (main story)
  • Robbie & Josha (Depths & camera quests)

2. Unlock:

  • The **Emergency Shelter** below the central tent.
  • The first **Skyview Tower**.

Secrets in Lookout Landing

  • A **hidden chest** in the Emergency Shelter holds decent starting gear once unlocked via a side objective.
  • Pay attention to NPC rumors about **north and east** – they foreshadow your best early routes.

---

Phase 2 – Hyrule Field Shrines & Gear

Prioritize nearby shrines:

  • **Kamizun Shrine** – combat-focused; teaches flurry rush windows.
  • **Tsutsu-um Shrine** – Ultrahand and log puzzles.
  • **Ishodag Shrine** – on the northwest cliff; pairs well with tower gliding.

Early Weapon Tips

  • Farm **Soldier constructs** and **Bokoblins** for horns; fuse them to simple spears and swords.
  • A **stick + rock** fusion is an easy early hammer for ore deposits.

Secret: The ruined fortress southwest of Lookout Landing hides:

  • A buried chest with **bomb flowers**
  • An easy bow upgrade if you explore every platform

---

Phase 3 – First Foray into the Depths (Optional but Powerful)

1. From Hyrule Field Chasm, dive carefully.

2. Activate the first Lightroot to reveal a chunk of the Depths.

3. Collect:

  • **Zonaite** for battery upgrades
  • A few **Poes** for Depths shop items

Return to the surface once you're low on Brightbloom Seeds – don't overstay on your first dive.

---

Phase 4 – Northwest to Rito Village (Detailed Route)

1. From Lookout Landing, use the tower to glide northwest.

2. Land midway at a safe plateau and:

  • Clear a shrine for extra hearts/stamina.
  • Hunt wildlife for meat and cold-resistance meals.

3. As you approach the snowfields:

  • Cook dishes with **Spicy Peppers** for cold resistance.
  • Consider buying or finding an early **cold-resist armor piece**.

Blizzards as Guidance

The unnatural blizzard around Rito Village acts as both:

  • A story hook (something deeply wrong)
  • A gameplay cue (you're entering an early intended dungeon path)

---

Phase 5 – Building Your Fast-Travel Web

Before major dungeons, aim for:

  • **5–7 Skyview Towers** unlocked.
  • At least **10 hearts** or a balanced hearts/stamina spread.
  • One or two **favorite vehicle blueprints** for longer crossings.

Good Tower Targets

  • **Hyrule Field** (done)
  • **Lindor's Brow** (great for northwest)
  • **Sahasra Slope** region
  • **Rospro Pass** (Rito region)

Each tower grants massive map visibility and more opportunities to spot caves, chasms, and enemy camps for materials.

---

Phase 6 – Secret Spots & Rewarding Detours

  • Many cliff faces hide **caves with Bubbulfrogs** – mark them for later mask rewards.
  • **Zonai ruins** often contain free capsules, charges, and design hints for powerful contraptions.
  • Look for ponds with **non-hostile wildlife**; they often hide Koroks, seeds, or quirky environmental puzzles.

By following this extended route, you'll turn the chaotic early hours of Hyrule into a structured yet flexible adventure, with enough shrines, armor, and Zonai tools to tackle the first major temples with confidence.
